Thanks to our vibrant community, SMA Awareness Month is off to a fantastic start.
Through the Cure SMA Facebook page, and through your own posts, pictures, shares, comments, and outreach, we’ve already reached millions of people since August began. Here are the top five breakthroughs we’ve seen so far.
- #CureSMA was the #1 trending topic on Facebook during the weekend of August 8-9. That was the same weekend as the annual SMA candlelighting, when thousands of families and groups across the US gathered together to light candles in honor of those living with SMA and in memory of those who have passed away from SMA.
- Florida mom Katie Myers took a photo of her son, Kaden, who has SMA, playing with a little boy at a science center. That photo has gone viral, with hundreds of thousands of likes, and tens of thousands of comments and shares. The Myers family was featured on ABC News, She Knows, The Mighty, WPBF TV, and more! On Wednesday, August 19, they will appear live nationally on Fox & Friends.
- ABC News Detroit anchor Stephen Clark, whose granddaughter, Scarlet, has SMA, recently reported on the #SMAshSMA campaign.
- We’ve partnered up with five different baseball teams across the country—from Portland, ME, to Seattle, WA—for SMA Awareness Days already this month. And four more are planned between now and the end of the month.
- Thanks to your generosity, earlier this month we hit our goal of raising $1 million as part of our annual campaign. This money will go directly to critical research programs and vital family support.
